under the mystery of an unknown spell…
There is a kind of imperative to give birth, to create. Perhaps it derives from our being made as an image perceived as the Creator. Eckhart names this obligation in a most telling manner: ‘What is my name? What is your name? What is God’s name? To create is to share. To share is to give back gift for gift, blessing for blessing. People who do not bestow in others spiritual things and whatever bliss is in them have never been spiritual. Creativity takes courage- courage to explore one’s deepest self and to let in the depths of the world’s struggles and joys, torments and agony. Rilke put it this way: ‘Works of art always spring from those who have faced the danger, gone to the very end of an experience, to the point beyond which no human being can go. The further one dares to go, the more decent, the more personal, the more unique a life becomes…..Matthew Fox
where do you find the courage to walk through a darkened doorway of your heart? of your creative meanderings? where do you forget to wallow in non-creating and begin again? is it a deeper well of calling that brings forth the unknown?
listen to your voice rising up, a trance of immense calling….
Remember, there is one word you are here to say with your whole being. When it finds you, give your life to it. Don’t be tight-lipped and stingy. Spend yourself completely on the saying. This is how I want to live, so it is how I want to do my creative work. And to a large extent it is the open-ended, self-renewing, and ever-expanding nature of the creative process- of creation itself- that is teaching me how to live this way, how to trust the underlying and imminent life force that sustains us all. And my faith sends out roots, grows stronger, deeper. How we do our creative work, whether or not we make conscious choices, whether or not we allow the wisdom of inner and outer worlds to guide us, whether we hold back or risk everything for a truth that will sustain us, is how we live our lives……Oriah Mountain Dreamer
